I have a dell optiplex gx1 and an STB nVIDIA TNT 16MB card came with it and SP4. The PC was having problems, so we did a restore and then NT didn't work. We got the computer guys at work to come reinstall it and they put on SP5. Before, I was running at 1600x1200 true color. Now, I can't get over 800x600 256 colors. :(

I've tried the drivers off the dell cd, and nvidia's latest, as well as STB's. The ONLY thing I can think of is that it likes SP4 and not SP5.

Any clues? I want to be sure before I tell them to install it agian.

Thanks

SP5 has a lot of problems.....why not install SP6a instead? That's the latest.

I know a professor who tested OSs and service packs for a living and he said to stay away from 5. He also said that 4 is the best one out and is still better than 6 so I would stick with 4.

Yeah tried 6 today. DIdn't work either. We're redoing NT and gonna stick 4 on there. Should work fine. Can I use nVIDIA detonators with my Dell machine?

SP5 is pretty stable.. since you hosed the installation a few times i suggest you format the drive and install service pack6a. then install your video drivers. i bet everything will work if done in that order. i bet those computer guys messed up the NT install. cause i have run SP5 on many machines with no problems at all, except for hardware failure. makre sure you tell them to format the drive, install NT, apply SP6a and then apply the detonator drivers (6.31) from nvidia.
