Service Pack 2

Well, if I had it my way I wouldn't be stuck with SP2, but since I lost my original XP Home disc, I had MS send me a new one....SP2 intergrated, obviously (bastards!!). Anyways, this thing is a real pain so far, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit.

First things first: ZONEALARM. This program CANNOT run on this new copy of Windows for some reason. It takes it waaay too long to load up once Windows starts...then when I try to open it, I almost always get a not responding message. It's a real pain in the ass, to say the least. Is it because the Windows Firewall is conflicting with Zone-Alarm? Would turning the Windows one help? And if so how do I completely get rid of it??

Second: I dont understand why my LAN connection shows up in the system tray. Previously, when I had my providers connection set up: I connected to the net and the 2 little modems showed up. Now, it's the same way, BUT, the LAN connection monitors are always there, and I wanna know how to get rid of them. Disabling won't do, because if I do that then my actual internet connection will not work either. To top it off, for Status is says "Limited or no connectivity".

Thirdly: Not sure if this is SP2 related or not, but there's an icon in the system tray labelled "Safely Remove Hardware" and it's for my 80 SATA Harddrive. How do I get rid of that?

And finally, and this will be a long shot, but is there any way to just remove SP2 out of Windows if its intergrated into the installer?? Or at least disable ALL of it's features? I miss my non-SP2 Windows 🙁

Thanks in advance guys! 🙂

 First no, second, you absolutely do not want to do this. There are a large number of under the covers security fixes that are in SP2, you want them on your machine.

As for ZoneAlarm, check with them.

For the lan connection you can always set the icon to it to 'always hide' in the configuration for the notification area.

Don't know why your sata is being shown as a removable device...

Have you tried disabling the Windows firewall through the Security Center applet? You don't want Zone Alarm and Windows Firewall running simultaneously.

In Control Panel / Network Connections, right-click your Connection and go to Properties as Bill described. You should see an option for "Show icon in notification area when connected". Make sure this is unchecked.

Do you have the latest SATA drivers installed for your SATA controller?

SATA is a hot-pluggable technology, at least in theory, so the removable-device thing may be par for the course here.

I've seen a discussion about this on a board somewhere (maybe here, I don't remember) and the general consensus is that that's exactly the reason why you see it.

huh... if u had clicked the button right beside "disable" on the connection status window it woulda let u uncheck display in systray.
no reason not to use sp2, just learn to use it. and displaying in systray has been around since before sp1
your windows is probably just old. reinstall.

Live with SP2.
I heard that MS will be withdrawing the option for users to choose not to upgrade to SP2 in a few months.
Think of SP2 as XPse
