I just finished counting all of my saved pocket change and I have $44.75 not including pennies. I was thinking about taking it all to a coinstar machine and getting cash. what kind of service charge or percentage do those machines charge? If it is alot how would I be able to get my coins into cash?

EDIT:
if you don't know what a coinstar machine is, they are located in a bunch of stores and they allow you to dump all your change into a bin and it counts it and then prints you a receipt which you take to the cash register and exchange for cash

The ones here charge 8.5% I think. What I do is put the pennies in the Coinstar (where 8.5% is pretty meaningless) and take the rest of the coins back to the bank rolled.

I think it's 7 or 8%, or at least it was in CA last time I did it. Don't have it out here in VT, so far as I have seen.

8.9% in my area

Quite a hefty charge for relatively little service, but I guess there are always enough lazy people to make it work. I also would only take my pennies, my other change goes towards the "toys I want" fund :)

IIRC, they give you a ticket to take to the register.

sorry, but my ferengi instincts strongly go against paying someone to give me my money.

I was thinking of driving back and forth from Canada adn dumping the Canadian change for more than it is worth. I don't know if it would accept them though.

Some places won't redeem them without a purchase either.

Depends on the bank. Mine charges a fee. Yes it sucks. I will just keep filling that 5 gallon jug till it falls though the floor. then I will go to a real bank and open an account with my change :)

It is 8.9% in my area. Last year I got back over $180. If I had rolled it myself I would have spent a few hours doing it and my time is worth more than it cost to use the machine.

For one whole year, I placed all my pennies in one jar and all my other coins in another jar... By the end of the year, each jar must've weighed five pounds.

Anyway.. I dropped the pennies in the Coinstar and got about $7.

I brought the other change to my bank, which charged me $0.02 a roll. I got about $200 and paid about $1.20 to get them all rolled.

My bank charges no fee if you have an account there. You have to leave the coins with them and they count them later and deposit it to your account. If you want them to count them while you are there, they charge a fee. (don't know how much)

Coinstar = RIPOFF!

You are going to pay 9% on your money?!?!? WTF? Take it to your bank and have them count it, if they want to charge you find a bank that won't and switch banks? Hellooooo? I hate those friggin' things!
