Server2003 64-bit

I'm considering upgrading to Server 2003 64-bit...just to play around with it and see if it's any different/better/worse than XP32 SP3. I will be seriously upgrading my system to help with editing/rendering HD video. I'm moving to an 8-core (dual Xeon) system.

Will Office 2003 run? Will my games run? Will Sony Vegas 8 Pro run? Is there a 64-bit version of IE7?

Obviously, the quick answer is "Try it and find out" but if I can find out in advance, I can save myself a lot of time and trouble. 😉

You can install and run 32-bit programs just fine. You have to have 64-bit drivers--that you have to be concerned about. Also it is not possible to run 16-bit programs natively (I believe there are work arounds to get them running, but they don't run normally). And yes, there is a 64-bit version of IE7.
 
Thanks much, FMC. So, aside from the driver issue, is it pretty much generally always backwards-32-bit compatibility? I know nothing is guaranteed until you try it...but generally, it'll work?

Thanks for the reply, Stash. Why do you recommend Vista or 2008 over 2003? My rationale: I'm pretty familiar with 2003 64-bit, as we run it at work on many servers. It's stable and patched (SP3's been out for awhile) and well supported, driver-wise. Thanks for your help.
 
Better performance, better security, better hardware support (although 2003 will probably be ok).

If you plan to run virtual machines on this box, then I would recommend some version of server, preferably enterprise if you can swing it because of the ability to run 4 VMs with one license.

I think you mean SP2. There is no SP3 for XP x64 or 2003 x64 (they are on the same support cycle).
 
Yep, you're right; I was thinking of Server 2003 32-bit and SP3. Good catch. :beer:

I'm actually not planning on VM's as this is my home box; we do run them at work though (ESX). I'm starting out w/4GB of RAM but may move up to 8GB, depending on performance.

I have very little experience with Vista and that little bit is with 32-bit...not to go OT but I'm not impressed w/Vista at all. Looks great, but it's bloatware. I'm really looking for rock-solid functionality and dependability...and of course the ability to address >4GB RAM.
