Server Suggestions

What do you recommend for a middle ground server for running as a Debian file server / Samba domain controller? Opteron? MB, etc.. an entire system build.

We currently run a Dell PowerEdge SC1420 Xeon system that expereincing some issues and we want to set up some redundancy. No budget as of yet but based on our needs and future needs I don't think we need anything to run the world , just stability and security.

Thank you.

For a server I would go at least a single quad core and if a single cpu go for speed. I would also get a board that is capable of upgrading, ie an extra cpu socket so you could throw in another one when you start to bog it down too much. I would also go with SAS drives. I haven't kept up woth the specifics lately, so I don't know exact hardware to state but quad core and SAS work great together in database and file servers from my current experiance. Stay away from Broadcom NIC's if you go Dell. As much as I hate Intel, get their Gb NICs.

Depending on Size you may be better for a server and SAN setup.

Of course it depends also on a budget 🙂
