Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place but here it goes...

I need a rather large and heavy box made out of plywood to move back and forth easily. The box should be about 3 1/2 feet wide, 2 feet long, a foot tall and weight about 100 pounds. If I setup mounting posts on either side of the box, could I use rails from a server mount, given that they can withstand the load, and some wood screws to make it work?

I understand what you're trying to do. You may want to look into Heavy Duty Drawer slides for this application. 100+ pounds is really pushing it, even for heavier-duty server rails. Googling "heavy duty drawer slides" pulls up a bunch of great suppliers.

If you already have a set of rails and want to give it a shot, I'd say be very careful about it. But if you haven't purchased anything yet, just go with the drawer slides. good luck. :)

Rails from something like a DL580 can easily hold 100lbs.

Makes me think of the rails for a (20 year old) Compaq ML580. It was 6U and easily weighed 100lbs. The rails themselves were 2U, IIRC. o_O

My reply to the OP was based on the assumption that he didn't already have server rails he wanted to reuse AND that said rails that he might not have were not of the "heavy duty" variety.

I have 3 rackmount cases at home. All three use generic mounting rails (vs. Dell/HP/IBM specific-to-server model rails). One out of the three sets of rails I have are heavy-duty. The steel is much thicker. Don't know how I wound up with them vs. normal rails, but compared to the other two sets I have, they are much more substantial.
