server or file share

Would it be silly for me to upgrade my current server (W2k3 std) to a W2k8 server if all I do on that computer is file share and backups? I am currently using the 180 day trial of W2k8 server and it's nice but probably overkill. I have Win7Pro on order and think that it should serve my needs just as well if not better than W2k3.

Also,
I'm curious how much cost figures into some of your decision of what to use. If it isn't available as a TechNet download, for instance.

If ALL you want to do is share files, that's easy and can be done with about any modern OS. If you want things like remote access, previous versions, redundant disks or folders, etc., then you may want specialty "server" software.

Unless you have needs you haven't mentioned, I wouldn't bother upgrading from Server 2003 to Server 2008.
