If my computer name is ==>

bluga.www.valhalla.com

and my Domain is ==>

www.valhalla.com

That means my server name is "bluga", and domain name is "www" ??

I have two computers. One with Win2K server and one with Win2k Pro. I'm trying to add Win2KPro machine to the domain (server), but it says the domain "www.valhalla.com" doesn't exist (which i created on the server machine).

Have you tried joining it to valhalla.com?
I dont know exactly how Win2K handles domains, but generally, valhalla.com would be the domain name, and www would be a name on that domain.
Or in this case, www could be a subdomain to valhalla.com.

But like I said, I dont know how WIn2K handles stuff like that, my brief experience with Active Directory involved only a domain with a "usual" two part name.

i tried every combination possible :) the "www" part was an accident.

Should i install DHCP?

When i finish installing, it still won't show up in MMC and my computer keeps telling me i need to install DHCP(but i already did!! it just won't show up)

I think I know the problem. The term "domain" used by windows is completely different than when it is used to refer to a web site. I have not had a chance to mess with Win2000 but with Win NT. When you set up a NT machine you have to choose what type of server it is. You select PDC and it asks you for a domain name. This domain name has nothing to do with a public "web" domain name. It is the network for which that PDC will controll.

Maybe this will help you some and maybe not. If you think I might be on the right track let me know and I will elaborate further if need be.

Have you setup Active Directory on your Windows 2000 Server box? If you have not, you will need to. Since when you first install Windows 2000 Server, it is a Member server only, not a Domain Controller. You have to install Active Directory to create a domain and turn your Win2k Server into a DC. Also, make sure that you have Microsoft's Dynamic DNS installed BEFORE HAND. Also, in the TCP/IP settings of your Server, put the IP address of your Win2k Server in bot the Primary and Secondary DNS servers. Then, go into the DNS Manager MMC and go to the Properties of the your DNS server. Click on the Forwarders Tab, and specify your Internet DNS servers (the ones that your ISP assigned to you).

If you have any further questions, post back.

And yes, your NetBIOS domain is WWW, and your computer name is Bluga. The reason you have to install DNS is that your Windows 2000 machines will lookup SRV records for the domain controllers to authenticate and log in to the domain.

Yeah a 'domain' in Win2k should be like MYDOMAIN or HEY, not somedomain.com, and you don't need the .com.

I think anyway... I played with it in NT4.

Not really. The Windows 2000 domain is still somecompany.com, but the netbios name is either the first name in the DNS name, or whatever you want it to be. Check out my Active Directory articles at our site here 8wire.com.

Thank you all for replies.

I've installed Active Directory and made the server Domain controller. But i'm also having problem configuring
DHCP. It says that "DHCP server is not running on the target computer"
Do i need to install DHCP to setup a network?

By the way i think my Win2K Professional machine still cannot join the Server machine. Does that mean my Active Directory is not properly configured?

I stated before to make sure that you have DNS installed and working properly. Also, if you install a DHCP server (a Windows 2000 DHCP server) you have to authorize it to service DHCP addresses. To authorize it, go to the DHCP MMC and right-click your server and select Authorize. It will authorize itself with Active Directory (given that AD is installed and DNS is working correctly).

The first thing I would do is check to make sure that DNS is installed correctly. Then authorize your DHCP server. Then, make sure that your Windows 2000 client is recieving a correct IP address from the DHCP server. Then, try to add it to the domain.

Yes it worked fine until i reboot................

New Scenario:

I've succesful installed a clean copy of Active Directory + DNS + DHCP and set my machine as Domain controller. I authorized DHCP service without any problem and my network was fine. However, after i Reboot my server, my DHCP service is gone. The error was "DHCP Server is not running on the target computer".........So i deleted DHCP and reinstalled again, but got the same error again. Thus my network is dead again. Any ideas?

I'm currently just using an arbitrary IP address and not connected to internet. Is the configuration the same?
