for security reasons, is it a better idea to have your server's ip address different than your workstation ip addresses? for example, server ip: 192.168.1.254, workstation ip: 192.168.15.1. the third "term" of the ip address is different.

Well if you use the standard /24 subnet mask then it wouldn't communicate without a routing mechanism in between anyway.

So I am guessing in your case it would only serve to break your IP network. Perhaps you can describe what your trying to accomplish and the board will offer suggestions.

If you mean for them to be on different subnets or vlans, my answer is yes.

If you're using a /16 network the theird octect doesn't matter, they would still be on the same subnet.

Keeping the IPs seperate without any sort of security device between the networks is almost pointless. If you have a router, firewall, etc with ACLs between them regulating traffic then it makes sense but if you allow all traffic both ways you're not buying yourself anything.
