Hey guys, I've just been asked to recommend server hardware and I'm lost. I can do all the software side of it and workstations are a breeze for me, but server hardware is a new ballfield altogether. I figure most people here have had thoughts about the high end of computing so maybe you can answer some questions for me.

-Would it be better to run a virtual server with a load-balancer hooked up to a failsafe .. or just 1 dedicated server with a failover.

- What kind of hardware can you recommend

- should I go with the pre-built. I fear my tenure building my home systems have made the words pre-made sour in my mouth.

Edit: Gah! I forgot to mention what this was used for. Thx Bob. It's mostly going to be a web server to put out a fair amount of dynamically created content as well as hold a database. It'll be hooked onto the end of a dedicated t1 line. This will eventually be a mission critical implementation after testing and whatnot, but I'd like to get it close to right the first time around.

Umm... You forgot to mention what you were going to use this server for. There are dozens of different server configurations out there, all designed for specific applications.

Not to mention that this would probably make a better General Hardware topic.
