Hi there,

I am looking to build and run a few rack-mounted gaming servers.

Bandwidth and hosting is not a problem, but I need some advice on hardware.

The servers should ideally be 1U tall, and of high spec. They will be running 5-6 12-man Counter-Strike servers on each machine.

Can anyone recommend cases/motherboards/CPUs/RAM/HDs for this use? I was thinking dual 3ghz 1mb Xeons. I have been looking around for server motherboard reviews for my purposes but have not revealed much.

Any help would be much appreciated, or links to appropriate sites.

Regards

I would go research what other game hosting companies are using. I know that NuclearFallout is using the following servers.

Dual Athlon MP 2000+ machines or better, 1.5gb RAM;
Dual Xeon 2.2ghz machines or better, 1.5gb RAM;
Dual Opteron 1.6ghz machines or better, 2.0gb RAM

Since CS is a console dos window server when run you're not going to need anything over 3GB. It's mainly your pipe that needs to be stable and the servers running clean.

Look at the PE 1850s from dell. They can be pricey but they are also dual xeon with all the goodies in a 1u package. Plus dell server support is usually top notch and I'm pretty sure each server comes with a 3 year warranty. If you wernt hosting so many servers on one machine I would say go for the PE750 line. They are single proc P4s though. Ive worked on both servers for sometime now and the build quality is superb. As far as the build out goes for the server its self I would say go with something like the following...

This will probably give you the power you need while having mirrored drives for data safety. There is an SC14XX something or another 1u server as well but I have never worked with one and from what I could tell you can not get a raid setup in them which means no mirror. That price also includes rapid rails to rack mount the server. f you dont need rails you could pobably save a couple hundred bucks. Ive never tried to build a rack mount server on my own so I'm not sure what the cost would be but I would venture to say you will not come close to this if you factor in support and build quality. One last note I did not include an OS in this purchase but if it were my CS server I would run it on linux anyway. Just my 2 cents ;)

EDIT: If you are looking for more then 1 or 2 I would contact dell. They do cut breaks for an order of multiple servers.
