A friend of mine needs to have about 7terabytes acessible by gigabit networking. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Preferably he would like to go the AMD route, my question is are their any AMD motherboards /w raid that will allow me to combine a bunch of hard drives togther (anything more than 4 SATA connectors... 8 would be good!) in order to fill his need. I realize this is a large order and that he might have to break it up into 3 or 4 machines.

thanks for the input!

Holy cow 7TB!!! Well i'd get a netework storage device, I believe they are called NAS. I dont know how he will get 7TB, as it would take at least 18 400GB drives, so you might need more than one network unit. Here are some NAS links

EDIT: The reason I figure you go with these NAS units is because they are designed to do what you want them to do, nothing else. A PC might be more expensive than this anyways!

thanks for the link. He is capturing over 700 thousand feet of film, hence the reason for the large amount of space. He asked me what the most "cost effective" approach for this. I do encourage others to post ff they have any other info as well. :)

thanks again!

Several of the NF4 mobo's have 8 SATA and 2 IDE(supporting 4 devices) but even with 12 drives the best you can get on one machine is about 5 TB.

Look at the Tyan Thunder K8W motherboard & get 2 - 3Ware 12 port sata 64bit/66mhz controllers.

This will let him use 24 wd 250 raid ed. drives that will give him a max of 24 x 250g = ~6000 gigs.

He can then use the onboard to give an addl 1000gigs or just get a third card.

I agree with a Thunder K8W and 3Ware 9500s-12s. It could server other uses too. Let it do DC. ^^

agree with this but I would do 400gb drives in two Raid 5 Arrays with a Hot Spare on both. which would yield 8TB .

although finding a case to hold all this will be a bigger problem....only case that I know of that would be close would be a stacker but I think that case maxes out with 16 3.5s if you fill it with harddrive bays. Maybe just do two systems each with 12 drives?
