Hello,
Following is the server's hardware/software config:
- Asus K8N-DL motherboard
- 2x AMD Opteron246 2000 MHz
- 2x 512mb ECC DDR SDRAM
- 1x ATI Radeon 850 Pro graphics card
- 2x Western Digital Raptor WD740GD SATA
- 1x LG's DVDRAM GSA-4163B
- 1x Cooler Master ATX12V Real450W
- Windows XP Pro (w/ Service Pack 2)
The server works at 100% CPU utilizations (CPU-only intensive tasks - such as the screensaver based BOINC) several hours a day and has done so flawlessly for months now.
It was only day before yesterday when I attempted to rip a DVD for the first time & burn it that it showed signs of being unable to cope with the job. Program crashed, restart happened and 'memory update' warnings popped up. I checked in BIOS & all looked fine and the OS booted up.
Yesterday while working on a video-editing job, once again, unseemly behavior was observed. I had to initiate a restart at which the BIOS detects nothing but one CPU. The screen freezes at this point. I cannot even enter the BIOS let alone XP.
The video-editing job was clearly different from BOINC in terms of its usage of, both, RAM & CPU. This particular combination failed the system.
Would greatly appreciate some advise as to the reason for this hardware failure.
Best,
