Ok I need to buy another cpu and mobo for my file/media/web server and am debating going with a Intel this time. The last pentium 4 cpu I ran was a northwood, and have not used a prescott as of yet so I am questioning the heat issues that are associated with them. My server runs 24/7 with little to no downtime, so I am a bit hesitant on going with a prescott. I would appreciate some opinions on this. I could play it safe and just go with a single xeon or opteron, or even a 3400+ or above AMD64, but since you all deal with such a wide variety of these cpu's, any input would be appreciated.

First of all, how many users are going to be pulling data off this server at a time? Really any ol' 700mhz computer will work fine for such an application. But, since you seem intent on building a better one, I've had great experiences w/ the Opterons. You need to have registered ECC ram, which adds a little to the cost of the system, but also makes it rock solid. If uptime is very crucial, stay away from A64, unless you're going to run w/ ECC Ram.

As for what p4 to go with, I dunno. I've only built opteron servers.
