server behind router, possible?

hi all...i'm somewhat handy with computer hardware (i can build a pc) but i'm not too knowledgeable with networking. we have a cable modem in our house (optimum online if anyone is familiar with the service) and i set up a lan using a linksys 4-port router (no problems there). now, i have a business website that is currently being hosted by my college system (and using domain redirect to cloak it) but i would like to set up my own server in house (i guess i would need it to handle a few hundred hits a day or more). here are the questions...
1. can i set up the server behind the router or does it need to be between the cable modem and the router?
2. if it needs to be directly behind the cable modem, can i just add 2 additional ethernet cards and use it as a router as well?
3. i'm not sure of the exact upload speed of the cable modem but i think it is around 128k-256k/sec, would this be too big of a bottleneck?
4. i have access to win2k server, is this a good os to use? i use win2k pro on my pc but i'm not familiar with the networking features, does anyone know of a site that has a good guide to using the server features?
5. on a somewhat limited budget (~$1500 or less) what kind of hardware would i need for a server (i probably have some spare stuff around that i could use)
5. is there any info i left out or anything else i need to consider?

thank you far reading and any answers you can give.....

1. you can setup the server behind the router
2. look at 1
3. if more txt then graphics, should'nt be too much of a problem, otherwise find
a free online hosting
4. win2k allows 10 concurrent users. you'd probably use w2k server if you're gonna
get 100+ hits
5. ...still thinking...

Hydro 😉

thanks for the input so far. to answer hydrobum, the website is pretty laden with graphics (it's still a bit rough but you can see the site for yourself www.compumatictime.com). and to jackmds, thanks for the link but i'm not sure how to interpret it and apply it to my situation. basically, i need a networking for dummies tutorial (know of any good ones?). i've heard terms like dhcp, dns, ip, etc... thrown around and i kinda know what they are but i don't have the hands on know how yet. do you, or anyone else, know of any tutorials that would literally guide me through this? i know it's asking a lot but if anyone could help it would be the kind and intelligent members of this anandtech forum!🙂
