Server 2008 + Media Player Classic = Can't Play .WAV music file smoothly. Problem

Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit with Media Player Classic doesn't play .WAV music files smoothly. It cuts out in the middle of music play and returns to normal. Then it cuts out again. Is this a known issue?

I tried all versions of Media Player Classic to the latest ones. No difference.

It plays it fine in Foobar2000 without a single issue.

My motherboard is ASUS H81M-C/CSM ATX DDR3 1333 LGA 1150

Sound card is Asus Xonar DX7.1 sound card

I feel really really really really pathetic because it can't even play .WAV file right? On Server 2008? Are ya kiddin' me...:colbert:

If you don't know, why don't you guys go try it? Install Media Player Classic and see if you can play .WAV music file without cutting off.

This wasn't an issue in Windows 7 or any other operating systems. Only happening with Server 2008.

Windows Server was not designed to play music. It was designed to be a server. Many Services are not enabled unless you:
1. Manually turn them on, or
2. Enable a role that uses the needed services.

If you want to play music, use a desktop/laptop OS.

It's not designed to play music? But it plays high bit rate HD videos smoothly???? It's smooth as butter and milk. Why is that?

And like I said .WAV plays fine in Foobar2000. This has nothing to do with enabling / turning on role or services. Both sound and graphics hardware accelerations are enabled in dxdiag.

It plays FLAC fine, not a single issue. Plays MP3's fine. ONLY .WAV it doesn't play smoothly, in Media Player Classic.

There must be some weird compatibility issue with Server 2008 and Media Player Classic? Or is it my sound card driver? Then why da heck it plays fine in Foobar2000...

This is why I don't like computers because there are too many variances... Almost nothing works perfectly. I know that with Macbook I had owned, was flawless in any damn thing..... Compatibility was far superior with OSX than Windoz..... HA HAH AH AHAAH AHAHHAHAHAHAHAAH

Server OSs are designed to manage a network, to be a file server, DHCP server, etc. Servet 2008 can do most things Vista can do, but why would one want to?

Again, you are comparing a desktop/latop OS to a server OS.

If you want to play music, go back your ipad.

I asked if this is a known issue and what the cause might be. All other operating systems (Server 2000 and 2003) I had used didn't have any issue playing .WAV music files.... And it plays fine Foobar2000 so your argument about Server OS not intended to play music is false.... Do you even know what Foobar2000 is? It seems you have no idea hence you ignore it and move on with your agenda. ^_^)

No, I am not "comparing" desktop OS to server OS perse. I am looking to see if anyone else with similar setup as mine ran into similar issue and what the fix was... I need technical insight from users, not what you think about how the server should run...

I sold all of my Apple products so I cant go back to iPad sorry.

Alright, I will stop being a pain about this. If you want to play music in Server 2008:

In Server Manager, enable:
1. Quality Windows Audio Experience
2. Desktop Experience

In Services, make sure:
1. Windows Audio Service, and
2. Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
are Started and set to Automatic

Thanks but aren't those services take up more system resource?^_^

Windows Audio service has to be on otherwise it wouldn't play audio at all. It works fine in Foobar2000 and my video playback software. The problem is specific to Media Player Classic.

Haven't you heard of FLAC?
I have. And I do have them. But I have a lot of .WAV files....

Yep, that's why it is off by default. Microsoft was smart here. They didn't want to waste resources an a file server by making it able to play music out of the box, as an example. We are talking about a Server version of Vista here. If they left everything on by default, you would have a server that runs as slow as Vista, only to get slower when different roles are set.

#1 2008R2 is the same code base as Windows 7.
#2 The one machine here I have with 2k8R2 that actually has a sound card played WAV fine but I am not MPC on it since it isn't a gaming rig.
#3 You need may need to switch the priority to fore ground applications and not network services like is by default. It is a server OS after all and it limits performance of the console.

This what I was going to post. By default, Windows Server OSes give priority to network services and background tasks. Desktop OSes give priority to foreground tasks, whatever that might be.
