Server 2008 License Q

SandEagle

Lifer

So this guy attended a launch seminar for Server 2008 Enterprise. He says it's never used and comes with a 1 year license. Based on his description he also mentions that MS confirmed it had no expiration date and will function forever. How does that work? Is it a trial? does this sound legit?

It's a fully functional trial for testing purposes only. I don't believe it expires, but it also can't be sold.

thanks. i don't intend to sell it, so i guess i might be okay. he says it comes with the 32/64 bit physical and virtual keys. what's a good price for it?

It's against the rules for him to sell it. I'm not sure what it's worth. I don't think it would be worth anything to me. I'm guessing the license could be yanked at anytime after the year is up. I highly doubt it would, but since it isn't a purchased product, and it's being used against the license terms, anything is possible.

Well, it's kind of like buying a warez copy of Windows. They could say I have Windows, and it's guaranteed to install, and activate now. That may very well be true, but in the end it's still warez.

If you just wanted to try it out, you can download a copy from MS I believe. That one /does/ expire, but you could test drive it and see how it works.

What you normally get from launch events is a not for resale copy or possibly a limited time eval version.

In either case, they are not for resale so their value is exactly $0, unless you get caught in which case it may cost you the full retail price in fines.

meh, i guess i'll avoid it.. they were asking $55 for it though

Not legit to sell... turn him in! Tell him you'll be happy to take it off of his hands for free, in exchange for not reporting him to Microsoft/SPA/RIAA... LOL
