Server 2003 SP2 Rebooting Multiple Times/Day

Mallet413

Junior Member
Have a Dell Poweredge 2850 with an attached Powervault MD1000 and LTO4 tape drive that randomly reboots several times a day. The machine acts as a file & print server.

I've removed a bunch of orphaned printer drives & registry keys using Kyocera's Driver Deleter. I also found a MS KB article saying that if hotfix 971486 is installed that it can cause random BSOD's and to install HF978243, but that's already installed so red herring there, apparently. I'd appreciate ANY interpretation of the following minidump:

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 8080f7e9, The address that the exception occurred at

bad ram...
EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000005 - The instruction at "0x%08lx" referenced memory at "0x%08lx". The memory could not be "%s".

ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000005 - The instruction at "0x%08lx" referenced memory at "0x%08lx". The memory could not be "%s".

which is my guess... im assuming your not running any developer software on it which could cause a memory fault like that?
or memory controller failing.

can u try to test the ram?

Going to try that tonight. I work remotely so it has to be during off-hours. Will memtest86 differentiate between bad ram and a failing controller?

Thanks for the suggestion.

no it will just tell you if 1 is broken... as it will fail if either is bad.

u need to debug after that by testing each ram.
If all your ram fails... then it can be memory controller, or u got really unlucky and killed all your ram.

but i also see this:

READ_ADDRESS: GetUlongFromAddress: unable to read from 808ad6f8
00000004

so yeah.. im very high leaning on bad ram...
unless again... your running some kind of developer software which is fault locking your system.

I have an old Compaq desktop I use as a server. Added some RAM and a couple SATA drives, and it works pretty well for a file server with Server 2003. After a while it started doing what you seem to be experiencing. I took out the original pieces of RAM and put in a new stick. Been running without issue since.

Memtest isn't perfect.

No failures after 2 passes. Nothing special on that server...Symantec Backup Exec, Symantec Endpoint Protection, and a SCSI DAS box attached.

I found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978243) which sounds like my problem, but the hotfix was already installed.

Hello,

What version of Symantec Endpoint Protection are you running? SEP 11.x OR SEP 12.1?

Make sure you are running the Latest version of SEP.

Currently, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.7300 and Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.3001 are the latest versions.

Secondly, make sure the Windows Server is updated with all the current security patches.

Hope that helps!!

Not sure if it's your problem, but I have never had memtest actually catch bad ram. Maybe try downclocking the ram a little bit in the BIOS and see if the problem persists. It might not be totally shot, but could be on its way out.

If the server is (hopefully) under warranty i'd have them send you some new sticks and swap them entirely.
