Server 2003 Licensing Question

I have a Windows 2000 DC server currently, just purchased a 2003 Enterprise application server.

Enterprise comes with 25 cals, but I'm wondering if I can use the cals in my current environment. Would I only be able to use these cals if I decided to make the 2k3 server a DC server? If I upgrade my 2k server to 2k3, would I be able to use the 25 cals from the enterprise server? I'm a little confused as to how/what I'm allowed to do with the enterprise cals.. I've only used standard edition server and purchased 5 and 10 packs of cals.

Thanks,
Brad

Server 2003 CALs can be transferred. A complete picture would help. You didn't say what licensing mode you are going to be using (Per Server, Per Device, or Per User), how many clients and servers there are, and what kind of usage pattern you are expecting for each server.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I have a simple 10 PC / 1 w2k server / 1 w2k3 member server. The old w2k server hosts sql and ms dynamics. The new w2k3 enterprise server will be used mainly for remote access/terminal server. The current DC is set to per server.

I need to purchase some TS cals and figure out the ms office licensing with the TS. Users will be using TS to acess Ms Dynamics.

How would I go about converting the 2k3 cals to 2k? or how do I use the cals on the 2k server.

I'd convert the W2K server to 2003, change all the servers to "Per User" mode, and use those new Enterprise Server 2003 CALs as "User CALs". That'll cover up to 25 Users, no matter WHERE they are connecting from. That's assuming that you have less than 25 total Users.

Presumably, you also have 5 Server 2003 CALs from your 2003 member server, too. So that makes 30 CALs to play with. Actually, 35 if you count the five CALs that would come with the Server 2003 package you use to upgrade the Windows 2000 Server.

If you want to use those W2K CALS, you'd have to upgrade them to 2003 CALs. But it doesn't sound like that's needed.

You'll need separate TS licenses for using the new Server 2003 as a terminal server. Again, you'll probably want to use Per User TS licenses if Users might be connecting from multiple PCs.
