Server 2003 Force Logoff option

Hello,

I'm running SBS2003 at home, and have run into a problem. I want the system to force logoff after logon hours have expired, and even though this setting is enabled in the Domain Policy, it does not always force logoff. Most often, this is happening when the kids are playing a full screen game, but we have observed it working correctly, even though they were playing a full screen game (usually Sims 2).

Any ideas?

what other things were happening at that time? have you changed any of the other gpo's since then?

No other things were going on at the time. The only other GPO's that have been changed were requiring CTRL-Alt-Del, Hide Last Logon Name, and pwd expiration/length.

This doesnt really sound like an issue with the policy itself. Typically if there were a problem with your GPO getting applied it wouldnt work at all (because it didnt get applied); you shouldnt see differant behavior at differant times unless differant policies were getting applied.

I dont use the force logoff after logon hours have expired setting (or even restrict account hours for that matter) so I'm not very familier with how this action is performed in the OS and dont really have any suggestions. It sounds a lot like the OS isnt logging them off like it's supposed to in certain circumstances (read a problem with the OS and not the GPO). If this is a big issue you could try contacting MS's PSS about the problem (who knows they may already know about this issue and/or have a fix).

And of course I've got to ask; why on earth are you letting your kids play video games on your server? As a general rule of thumb this is a very, very, very bad idea.

Sorry I did not make this clearer. The kids are playing games on their workstation. Even I do not use my server for any "regular" functions. The policy should log them off of the workstation at the expiration of their logon hours, but as has een said a few times...it is not consistent.

So than what is the client they are running (xp, 2k, etc.) and what service pack is it running?

BTW it's the client that performs this action (not the server); all the server does with Group Policy is provide the configuration.

The client is XP Pro, sp2, all hotfixes. They're usually playing games, on messenger, etc... (kid's computer...trying this so I can limit the time they're on the computer).

Interesting...I'm not altogether surprised at the Full-screen game problems. You'll notice that in the screen-saver section there are options for dealing w/ full-screen applications.

Take a look at their settings for screen-saver and power options. (Remember these are per-user settings, so you have to be logged in as them).

I'm curious as to how it works out, since I'm about to implement this for my kids. (to prevent a certain child from getting up at 4:30 in the morning on a school day to play on the computer!)
