Seriously, where does one get an alternator sized chunk of meat these days?

All kidding aside, produce and meat's just not happening locally in lesser NYC (like queens) - favorite online meat sources? I don't need gourmet grass fed dry aged, i just need to feed a family of four fed (4 to 8 total servings a week at snake river prices would equal our rent I believe)

At your age monitoring Police radio for fresh road kill worked great. Just cut off the hind quarters.

If you're willing to go to the store, plenty of meat at Costco, Sam's Club, and Restaurant Depot. More meat than you'll ever eat in your lifetime.

Even my neighborhood local grocery stores like Publix now have plenty of small portion sized meat. Chicken, pork, and beef.

Hope to find that to be the situation in my area. I've reached the point where I have close to zero food beyond a big bag of white rice.

I have not been to a grocery-store in a month and I SO am not looking forward to it ... thinking I'll go about 8:00 am Thursday.

Will report back.

But yeah, that. Meat isn't all that hard to find. There might be shortages of certain cuts at certain times, but you can fill up your car pretty easily if you compromise.

Yep. Certain cuts can sell out, and I understand. But overall, food supply seems to be returning to normal. And out of all the meat, beef was really never in short supply. Chicken, yes. Pork, for very short period of time. Beef, not really.

Now, trying to find something like N95 mask or hand sanitizer? Good luck.

Last time I had to go out for milk and produce, the store was a lot better than expected. Still wiped on paper products and very light on cleaning supplies, but most everything else was starting to bounce back. Even the pantry staples like flour, rice and pasta that were pounded early around here were readily available. Meat was plentiful.

Processing plants have only just started shutting down since last week, so I’d expect further meat shortages over the next few weeks (especially poultry and pork).

If price and freezer capacity is no object, you can try direct from local farms.
Edit: Meant to say “unprocessed” cuts from local farms—like the big slabs that hang in meat lockers if you can do your own butchering.

How long ago was this?
I went to Publix supermarket like 2 days ago to buy some yogurt, and they had plenty of chicken, pork, and beef. I didn't see any shortage of meat. Everything looked pretty normal to me. They even got rid of limit 2 sign they had at the meat department.

As for shortage of meat in the US, that's pretty much impossible. US has over 2 billion pounds of excess meat in cold storage. 2 BILLION pounds! And it's not like we're exporting like crazy right now because of the COVID-19. So only thing is because some processing plants are temporary closed for couple weeks, there might be slight disruption in processing fresh meat. But that hurts the farmers more than retail consumers like us.

Some farms will actually sell you whole cow. We're gonna need a bigger freezer.

You can also try to get a tag for a moose, though that is kinda hit and miss and you'll have to wait till hunting season in fall.

Maybe around your parts, there was a period of 2-3 weeks here where you'd be lucky to see a top round steak or a pound of ground beef. Granted this was only at stores within a 20 mile radius (I didn't check further), but it was a thing. Fortunately that stopped a little while back.

A week ago the local Sam's Club was limiting some meat. You could only buy one item of fresh chicken. What I wanted was a tray of wings, which usually has 20+ wings, and a couple whole chickens (the sell them 2 to the bag), but could only buy 1 item. Went for the whole chickens, as it is enough for more meals.

Costco and HEB both had plenty of meat. Costco even had eye of round roasts, which are approximately alternator sized and shaped

Thanks for the feedback guys, after a few weeks of hiccups it looks like I'm able to find meat locally with relative ease. I found a great compromise, since my wife and I are juggling too many plates to be full time cooks as well: meal delivery. We signed up for 2 services (freshly and a local one, dinnerly's supposed to be fine as well). She gets plenty of fish and I get my 2x servings a week in, for much less than take out and maybe 20% more than assembling the ingredient ourselves. Also founds https://fatdaddymeats.com/ fat daddy meats. Decent google reviews but I haven't tried them. Fingers crossed that news about the supply chain grumbling are unfounded.
