having lived here off and on since I was a teenager (moved to NJ in the early 90's from Oregon and lived out near amish country in PA for a stint between 1999 and 2004), and I've never really believed people from out of state when they complain about "the smell."

but after 2 months of commuting on 95 / the NJ turnpike (prior to my new job, I'd literally never used the NJ turnpike for anything), I totally understand it. what the hell is it? it hits me like a wave every morning and evening when I drive through Elizabeth, but usually passes an exit or two down the highway.

Ass. It's the smell of the ass of the country.

Seriously. I HATED going to that state. It freaking stinks. It's not just one area. It's the whole damned state.

I saw on Jeopardy tonight that NJ has more toxic waste dumps than any other state. Maybe that is what the odor is?

Have you ever been to Atlantic, Cape May, or Ocean counties? If not, don't talk.

Go visit exit 74 and south... or the way northern part of the state.

Then come back and tell me its the whole damned state.

Yep. Traveled all over. Smells like death and rotting flesh. Even the beaches have that stench.

-edit-
I'm guessing you don't smell it because you live there and are accustomed to it?

If you live their you become acclimated and dont smell it. Anyone moving great distances at first is going to smell the differences. When I went to new orleans several times back in the late 80's it was the stink of the place that really impressed upon me. Of course in many places the odoriferous eminations will be pleasant. I would say that most swampy or coastal cities are going to be particularly stinky and more so as they age like a rotting human cheese miasma.

How come no one thinks other states smell? what about massachusetts? the boston area has a lot of industry and such. It doesn't smell to me, but maybe that's because I'm "used to it".

my guess it's a combination of swampland/estuary in the northern part of the state combined with a large number of tourists driving through the state on their way to NYC.

I really don't think any part of the state smells super bad other than the NJ turnpike section of elizabeth/newark (outside of the cities, but all major cities have a stench)
