Is virtualization software especially hard to develop? It seems to me VirtualBox is a prime candidate for a community driven fork.

The drivers need signing, which costs money, so it would be difficult without some kind of sponsorship. Who knows there might also be few patent issues as well.

I could see some companies picking it up if(when) Oracle drops the ball. Red Hat for the business side, and Canonical on the user side.
