I'm a HUGE WP8 supporter and have been a proud owner of every major release. I haven't had much to gripe about until now. Why the F*** can't a Microsoft device play thru another one?? The MS Zune played perfect but mine recently died after 4 years of non stop use. These are the simple things that drive ever day users away from certain products/companies.. Albeit I'd probably never by a Ford again because of this, not a WP. Anyone looking to buy a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid that CAN'T play a Microsoft phone via USB Sync? :)

I'll shut up now.

To be fair, Androids can't either. My Nexus refused to play through the rental Focus I had. Pretty frustrating when the Bluetooth stopped recognizing the phone too, so I had to resort to an aux cable. Ford's Sync has some issues still, having to pull the fuse to reset it and whatnot, it's not that great.

If I understand you right, you're upset that your car doesn't read your phone like a usb flash drive. Well my 2011 Rogue doesn't either, and honestly I never expected it to. When I plug my phone into the pc, it has to download special drivers to be seen properly. That alone should be a clue that it's not going to act like a simple usb drive.

I'm confused what the OP is talking about, but actually WP8 phones DO show up as generic USB drives (WP7 didn't, but 8 does).

Not sure if this is the same issue but I can't get my Android phone (Nexus) to play through the car's USB. Ticks me off. My iPhone worked fine. I do have bluetooth audio though but seems to sound a little subpar relatively speaking.

Because the new Android phones and Microsoft phones doesn't use UMS, that's why USB readers can't really read it properly. They are using MTP. While iPhone have their own proprietary standard that many manufacturers support, which is one of the better points about iPhone/iPods, since it had a much longer maturation period.

It should play unprotected content via the USB just like a USB flash drive. The only devices that work with SYNC over USB and protected content is the iOS devices.

I guess I didn't make much sense in my original post.

Sync is made by Microsoft. My Microsoft Windows Phone plays fine thru the Bluetooth, it doesn't play thru USB. It connects to it fine but says it cant play protected content via usb. Iphones play with no problem. My old Microsoft Zunes played fine. It makes no sense for them not to support their own devices yet they work fine with Apple. I'm sure they have some BS excuse but I don't care.

Make sure you do the Sync updates. It does help. Make sure you have Gracenote turned off. My connection does work with Bluetooth and Lumina 920. BUT, it will skip sometimes every few seconds once in a while using BT. It will continue until I restart the car. The other issue is the indexing. If I plug into the USB, it will take forever to index. Turn the index off and its difficult to find music you want to play. When it works, I love it. Bit I am about to take this thing back and replace the sync and navigation system. I, like you, thought MS products would work better with MS products. But I think MS and Ford should have better functionality between MS products. At this point, the iPhone works better with Sync. But I do realize this is MS's fault. I know people who work at MS and they were fully aware that these issues were present before launch. Its not Fords fault but it is their problem.

Wow. Thanks kitten licker dude. While I may be a noob on the board, I have been using Anandtech for years for advice on all my builds, probably since your voice started changing.
