Seriously considering taking a job in Iraq.

I've considered the same actually. Hell, $250,000 in less than a year will pay off all my bills and let me go to school full time to finish my degree. My recommendation to you is to buy body armor and wear it discretely over there. You will spend a pretty penny on the best stuff, but it's thinner, lighter and provides good protection.

I have to admit the truck full of money is playing a part in my deliberations. Tax free as well if I last at least 8 months in country.

I would do it in a heart beat. Yes there is the risk of dying but you're helping rebuild a country, tax free for 8 months, and GOBS of money.

The toughest part for me would be parting from my wife for more than 1 day, dunno if I could really do it.

Definitely get some sort of body armor/kevlar and if allowed, a weapon.

how much scratch we talkin here? and what would you be doin over there?

I don't have firm details on what it will all come to with travel, expenses, allowances etc...but conservatively something over 100k tax free mostly if I stay for 8 months. I will be working for USAID in security and logistics work.
That's pretty vague. Care to elaborate?

They are hiring people to help establish security for aid distribution and other programs. Right now a lot of stuff is just disappearing or being stolen/looted/hijacked. They have huge warehouses with WFP/USAID stocks in them that are regularly pilfered at night. Truck convoys never arrive or are hijacked etc. etc. I will probably spend the first month or so working with the UN WFP guys who prior to the war had a fairly effective security program for aid. Supposedly, we will be bringing in more local guards as well as other foriegn contractors to deal with this. Not sure on details yet.

Make sure you have a good life insurance policy, some of the people over there really don't like Americans 😉

I'd advise against it and I'm sure your wife will as well. She's too young to be a widow.

Will you get to carry a weapon to defend yourself?
I would think there isn't a life insurance policy ever written that would cover a voluntary trip into a war zone.
I agree with the sentiment of your post.

i would do it if the actual work was something i was interested in (not a comment on the position, i dont' even know what you'll be doing there, i am just saying...)

and i don't think he should worry about his wife or whatever since she is in the army anyways

That is something that I was looking at myself, unfortunately nobody really has job listings for that, so theres not much that I can do.
