seriously annoying windows bug

Sometimes, when copying lots of files using drag and drop, over the network, windows will randomly dump files to my C:\ root instead of sending them where they are supposed to go. No error, no warning, no explanation, I just mysteriously see all these files that are not supposed to be there. I hate this bug.

It usually happens when I copying everything from one old windows install to a different location.

Anyone else seen it happen?

What version of Windows?

That's a "bug" that I've NEVER heard of. The worst thing that Windows 98 used to do was have Explorer freeze up when copying LARGE numbers of files.

It's happened to me on windows 98, 2000, and XP.

I am not certain, but it *might* olnly happen when the file move is stopped due to a problem. For example, I'll be moving the Documents & Settings folder and it'll get to a file it can't move because windows thinks it is in use. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough that I can expect to see it at least once if I am trying to move the contents of a large drive with lots of files that was used for some time.

edit: eh I guess I wasn't too clear in the original post, edited it, but this happens only when copying over the network.

Example situation: computer A's OS goes bad for whatever reason and won't boot. Replace hard drive on computer A, reinstall windows on new hard drive. Put old hard drive in computer B, shows up as drive D:. Copy contents of Drive D: in computer B to a folder in computer A over the network. At some point, check C: drive of computer B and notice lots of files that should have been moved to computer A.
