Serious XP issues

I was trying out a used CD-RW drive I just picked up and installed the software that it recommends (Iomega Hotburn). After installing the program sucessfully, the computer restarted and started to have issues. The computer will start into XP and then will run for a minute, suffer a severe error, and then it restarts by itself. I have tried to start the computer into safe mode, but the computer still restarts by itself after a minute into Windows.

I'm lost and this computer has most of my important documents on it. I'm on hold with Dell Service support right now, but I thought that I could give you guys a try.

Thanks in advance!

Edit* I'm running Windows XP Home

What version of Hotburn? It was very unstable in XP, but there's a patch available. If you don't have a recent version, you might want to check Iomega's website.

SpookyFish,
Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I downloaded it off Kazaa, and forget what version it is.

Problem is, Once I log into Windows, I can't do anything, as when the boot finishes, the computer immediately restarts. I've tried Safe Mode too, but it does the same thing.

Now I know how much of a piece of schit Iomega software is. I read that it was the best program to use with this external CD-RW, some program. Damn.

Well it was definitely the Iomega Crapware.

What I did was reboot to the Safe Mode prompt. There is an option that reads: "Last know good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" and I chose that. The computer booted up in Normal mode and let me unistall the crap that F-ed it up.

Now it is running like it did before. And just for safe measure, I restored my system to a checkpoint earlier this evening before I installed the software. And so far so good.

Again, thanks for your help.

The easiest way is probably going to be to do a repair. Boot from the Windows XP CD. IIRC, The first screen you'll have to choose to exit or install, and the second screen you can hit R to repair the installation, and then follow the prompts.

Otherwise, you'll have to go into the command console and disable the service that's causing the problems. Boot from the CD, and choose repair. This time follow the prompts to the command console. From there you'll have to enter the administrators password. Now, from the prompt you can type listsrv to get a list of all services with a discription and the startup settings. I wish I could tell you the names of the services that Hotburn intalls, but I don't know. You could try looking for Cdr4_xp, Cdralw2k, cdudf_xp, dvd_2K, mmc_2K, PrtSeqRd, pwd_2K, UdfReadr_xp.
To disable the service from the command console, just type disable and the name of the service...for example, if there is a service named Hotburn, type disable hotburn.

I wish you well

I hope someone can give you more help than I have
