*Serious Thread* Anyone worried about their future?

Right now I'm a University student who has trouble finding a job, any job. Now I started thinking about the future. What happens when I graduate and still can't find a job? No job, means no money, which means can't start a family, get a house, do what I enjoy, etc...

I don't wanna end up as some bachelor working crappy jobs living all alone in a crappy apartment for the rest of my life. We have a belief in our culture/family that the son should always do better than his parents. My dad did better than his father and I should be able to do the same. I'd like to continue that tradition, but if my current luck with finding jobs continues, I'm screwed.

Anyone else feel the same way about their future? Right now I'm sitting here on the computer doing nothing. The only highlight is going to gym in the morning and looking for jobs in the afternoon. I don't want to be sitting on the comptuer when I'm older doing nothing. I wanna be chillign with family, being out on the racetrack racing in amatuer series, going on trips, etc...and most importantly.. I want the satisfaction taht I earnt my own money!

Thoughts?

In the back of my mind, graduation scares me since the job market sucks at the moment. The only time it really gets to me or causes concern is when others bring it up. Other than that I live life one day at a time and don't worry about the future. Granted, I have the mindset that one should be prepared if something to go wrong in the future, but I don't really worry.

Get a part time job. I think the problem is that you can't find a tech job or a job in your industry. Hell, I worked at a golf course before my current job (I'm now a student employee at UM Dept. of Public Safety) and I sure as hell didn't plan on being a pro shop employee all my life.

Get a sh!tty job. Get some money. It'll help you feel better about yourself.

All of the angst about the job market on ATOT lately presumes that these circumstances will be the norm for the rest of everyone's careers. It won't.

Keep in mind that the great majority of AT folks are in school, and are looking for their first real job.

The first job is always the hardest to get.

Chin up. It is not that bad out there, at least once you have been out for a while.

I'm know I'm doomed, therefore I don't need to worry.

Seriously though, happiness/satisfaction is not something you can look for. Happiness and opportunities simply comes to those deserving of it. Relax, finish up school, and you'll find something. The way I look at things is that, if an average person and a majority of the population can find a career, start a family etc..what can possibly bind me from doing the same?

I've been working since I was 14.

Same here - got my job in a pro shop when I was 14 years old. Working while going to school is tough, but it's also extremely satisfying.

Same boat. I started out reffing weekend soccer games when I was 14. Not what I would consider a real job now-a-days, but it brought in the money. Have had a job since.

Yeah, you never have to face that "What am I going to do when school is over" problem.

Mad Indian, your concerns are real, but I think you're taking the presumed results to an extreme.

The economy in the United States is slow and we're seeing lots of change. You may get a slower start in your career than you'd anticipated. But that doesn't mean you'll end up alone, penniless and toothless in a ditch someday.

My personal advice to you would be to minimize and debt you have and don't take on any more debt. That's probably the number one thing you can do to keep yourself out of the stress of needing to find a job.

And find something else to worry about! You're worrying FAR too much about things that are just not going to happen.

With a college degree, you should be able to get into Officer Candidate School in some branch of the military. Join up, say in the Air Force, and spend a few years in. After your term is up, then make your move into the private sector - former military officers are very valued in business, especially for management positions.

No, nothing like that.

Its just the satisfaction you get from earning your living and also being better off. Like the other guys said, they started working when they were 14. I wish I had the motivation/foresight and opportunity to do that when I was 14.

I'm not worried all the time, but recently I started thinking about this.

I really gotta find some type of job. I'm trying to get a lead on this warehouse job, pay isn't too good...but its better than nothing.

Don't go to school become a retarded porn star! Think about it seriously... you have a lot of "hard" work ahead of you, and you have some "long"-jevity in the porn business. Plus, you have "fun" and don't really need to worry about the future, unless of course you get some VD on your "equipment".

You've got a long time to go. Don't worry. You're just starting out. Things will get better over time.

Thanks for the advice. I guess another reason I'm worried is that a few of my friends have gotten jobs while I'm still searching. I think the main concern is that I hope its not 'me', but the conditions in general.

I agree with Maad Indian. Never has there been such a grim outlook on the job market. Ok, at least not that I remember (and yes I am pretty young). I know most (a very high proportion) of my friends don't have jobs. What's worst is their older siblings (by a few years) don't have any significant jobs either. I mean it's pretty depressing.

yeah, i was one of the many college graduates trying to get a (professional) job in the early 80's.

today's conditions are nothing compared to that.
