Serious questions: to serve or not to serve

We currently have 4 comps in the house (soon to 5 or 6) and my current network setup seems to be very unstable. I'm considering getting in on one of those Dell server deals and setting up a server and running everything through the server. I'm not a networking pro by any means, so I need all the help I can get! Thoughts, suggestions?

I would not do that in a home network - you end up with all your eggs in one basket. Anything brought in by the workstations goes in or through the server. The server goes, you are dead in the water. A peer-to-peer network is best for home users. Each is independent, and in your case you will have quadruple redundancy.

So, why not take this thread to the Networking forum and try to get the problem resolved?

If you are running XP Pro, you should have no problems. XP Home is less robust in the network departtment.

Exactly what is unstable, and what are you planning on serving?
