this may sound weird but I heard somewhere that people actually go for internships after finishing college, is that true, or is it all baloney?

It depends on what you mean by internship. For someone like an engineer, internships are only temporary positions before someone's ready for fulltime employment.

For someone like a liberal arts major, an internship is a way for a company to pay you nothing while you "learn."
