Serious Question (w/ POLL)

Ok, my teacher was arguing with me about the word gay and homosexual.
I said "gay means happy, are homosexuals scared of the word homosexual?"
She said something to the effect of "go to the office..." .
All because I voiced my opinion/had an intelligent conversation with a not so intelligent/misinfomed teacher.

Now do you wonder why people dont speak up anymore about important issues?

so i am asking homosexual ATers what they think is the appropriate name to call a homosexual and do you agree that homosexuals are afraid of the word homosexual.

are you afraid of the word heterosexual (straight people)?

BE RESPECTFUL

I don't know any people who go for the same sex that prefer the title "homosexual" over "gay". Nor do I know any people who go for the opposite sex who prefer the title "hetrosexual" over "straight". I think homo/hetro-sexual are scientific terms that people avoid because they seem so ridgidly defined. I would like to think describing ones self as gay has a lot more culture to it than describing yourself as scientifically homosexual.

You can call me anything but late for dinner.

The gay community are the ones that took the word and made it their own in the first place, way back in the day. Now it's just another word which has two unrelated meanings, which you have to figure out from context. Eventually we'll probably stop using it to mean "happy".

That's because gay people can't be truely happy.

😉

These days, "gay" seems to have a negative connotation. It is used a lot now to say that other things are stupid, and has many other meanings in our culture now that has nothing to do with being homosexual.

Gay is a lifestyle, homosexual is what you are while pretending to be heterosexual (or something like that)

Actually that's pretty gay too. 🙂

People don't like to use technical words for things, it's that simple. It's not derogatory anymore than the word straight is. Actually, it really has 3 meanings now: happy, homosexual, and lame.

Go to the office.

LOL !

You're right, the word homosexual isn't on people's tongues. I don't hear it at all. Could be because it's not easy to say, at least in part. It has 5 syllables. Gay has one. Therefore homosexual sounds stilted, clinical, cold, scary. Honestly, I think the English vocabulary dealing with the whole issue is inadequate and almost all of the information I see and hear is confusing if not outright misleading. It's to me an even more loaded and confusing issue than racism. I live in the S.F. Bay Area, and I think the issue gets a lot more ink and tube and speaker than it deserves. It's because (I figure) so many homosexuals migrated here during the late 1960's and the 1970's, giving the region an identity as a haven for freaks of all kinds.

I'm not voting in the stupid poll because I'm neither gay nor homosexual, dudekins. Your poll is dumb. Go to the office.

The poll isn't suppose to reflect that you are in fact a homosexual. It is suppose to ask you if you were a homosexual what you would like to be called.

If I were to be proud to be homosexual I would in fact want to be called homosexual.

But, as I am not a homosexual I wouldn't want to be called some generic incorrect term for being homosexual.
