Serious question for all the hardcore gamers in here... (WoW fans, etc.)

Do you ever think that when you're 40 or 50, you'll regret spending 20-30+ hours every week of your youth/"prime" trying to advance in level or acquire more gold pieces?

Do you think you'll look back and wish you had spent more time playing sports, enjoying the outdoors, flirting with girls, hanging out with friends, etc.?

Just wondering, no offense intended.

Hrm... I think I'd regret not playing cuz of the freaking $15 a month charge. Leveling up is the way to go

Why can't you do both?

Do people look back and regret all the time they spent playing basketball? Or the times they spent drinking with friends? Or the time they spent reading novels?

Will you look back and regret all the time you spent posting to AT Forums? I mean, 6000+ posts? :p

See? Everyone can be accused of "wasting" their time by someone else who enjoys different things. Why is flirting with girls and sports somehow "better" than playing a video game? That's just your opinion, and you'd have to be pretty arrogant, IMO, to think that your opinion is so much better or more important than someone elses, don't you think?

(ps - and no, I'm not someone who plays more than a few hours (5-6) per week playing video games, not that it matters.)

Yes I'm only 20 and I already regret it, for the most part.

Exactly. I may regret that I didn't spend my time perfecting my pianism, but you are comparing one passtime (or several), to another. Neither is very constructive, so why would I regret choosing one over the other?

I am 40 and divorced so my social life is down the tubes... My Friends are all married and attached to a ball and chain so they are screwed. I like hardcare gaming takes my mind of my shatty life of Post Divorce syndrome and trying to rectify my credit which my EX totally fvcked up.

I just play games in between the times of going out with friends or doing more constructive things. Its just something to fill my time with.

well said. respect and acceptance is mutual tomato, i doubt too many ATOTers would find being engulfed in physics problems any more attractive or dignified compared to researching different builds to come up with the best character. the only regrets i have in my gaming experience is hours lost on trial and error early on and not being able to capitalize on some of the incredible trading opportunities when they presented themselves.

So in retrosprect (good thing you brought this up, cuz i daydream about getting things done right if i could backtrack in time), i wish i could have spent time and managed resources more wisely while playing a particular game, never regretting the fact i have spent a lot of my free time into it. to me it seems worse way to waste time is what one of my roomates is doing; going clubbing every weekend, wasting loads of money and all weekend just trying to get 'some action', only to feel more desperate and unsatisfied with each passing week. everyone has different criteria for 'satisfaction factor' in their lives and i rate myself very highly on it. i suppose i am lucky to have more humble requirements to keep me entertained.

Really didn't mean to step on any toes, sorry if I did... and I'm definitely not suggesting one pasttime is "better" than any others, I was just thinking that when you're young (I was thinking 13-22-ish), you usually have all the time in the world. No 8-5 job, etc... and with your youth, you can do any number of things... when you're 50 or 60, you'll still be able to play WoW, you know? But you won't be able to do some of the things you could've done when you were young... if you're enjoying yourself and having fun though, I suppose that's all that matters.

My wife and I are causal gamers and since we both enjoy playing WoW together we have stopped watching TV in the evenings to play. We still spend time with our children; attend church, school functions, and family events. But I didn't get the opportunity to play game no stop when I was a kid. The only console available to us at that time was an Atari 2600 and that cost $150. So playing a PC game two hours a night five times a week is time well spend with my wife. :)

Interesting question. Even moreso because the nature of a lot of the MMORPGs is almost to be social, albeit within the game. I suppose you could derive some sort of social skills from playing certain games.. whether it be joining & being loyal to a clan in an MMORPG, or the casual chatting between frags in HL2 or CS. That said, you wouldn't make out too well going down to the variety store for a bag of milk and trying to pay with 6500 zennies.

As far as regretting something, you have to reach a point later on in life where you are experiencing setbacks due to something you should or shouldn't have done in the past. As the *majority* of gamers are young and haven't reached said age, they probably don't regret anything.

Personally, I can attest that after a full night of fixing computers or gaming (or neffing) while the wife sits on the couch watching lonely TV... I feel like a turd. I never really became a hardcore computer hermit until a LOT of my partying was done with though.

I've been in all types of social circles, and played an assload of video games alone and with friends along the way. No regrets, cuz I'll still be playing games in my 40's-50's. I've already skipped on most of the early 20's "fun" for more important stuff.

Theres nothing wrong with MMOs. Its the fact that many people play them obsessively thats the problem. But the same can be said about all of the above as well.

Right now, I'm bored at home while everyone else is at work/school, its bone cold ass freezing outside, and I already have a GF. Theres nothing better for me to be doing right now but playing an MMO, :p
