You're both missing the point. This high lights how some families can't afford internet in a free market system, apparently in silicon valley, no less. The question isn't where should they sit to do it, it's why there's no free market solution for low income families in their area.

In my area, towns with enough low income families qualify and can sign up for internet essentials, a program run by Comcast that provides $10 / month cable internet, no modem / gateway lease fee, speeds 25 down / 3 up.

Maybe this is the reason:
In response to recommendations made by the California Department of Public Health and as a precaution to help limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), circulation and in-person services are temporarily suspended and all State Library locations are closed to the public

And the fast food connection would be faster than the library one

Have you forgot about this COVID thing going on?!?

Even outside of COVID, libraries are typically overwhelmed by people that need internet access or just a warm/cool place to go. Seniors also go there to read and be around other people.

Internet service is a pretty basic social need at this point. It's like seeing an article about kids using the bathroom at Wendy's because they don't have plumbing in their house and saying "why don't they just go to the bathroom at school?" It should be a public utility, and it should be subsidized for low income families at the very least. Really, it should just be free.

One of my girlfriends was the head of a library in a town very much like this one but in Texas, and one of the things I can tell you is that our public libraries have had their budgets cut down so tight that they really can't afford even basic services like WIFI at levels that are actually useful. Almost everything a library does has to be suplimented by private donations, and those just are not coming in this year.

Our grandson's family is dirt poor...and lives in a dirt poor county in CA. (Merced county) There are so many kids in the school system who have no wifi access at home that the school district has purchased "mifi" devices for the students who need them.

On no, my prospective state legislator is making it a campaign pledge for public internet access. What oh what should I do? Would I be voting for a socialist? Please help.
Yes. The only proper capitalist thing to do with tax money is to hand it directly to billionaires with nothing expected in return. If we buy goods or services with our tax money we are dirty socialist.

Actually you should be happy that young lady is doing her homework!
She could be out selling drugs or other nefarious things....
Shorty if so concerned why not make a donation to the Library in her town??? Or are you all talk.....no real concern....

Some people never seem to have that "walk a mile in my shoes" moment. My world is the reality.

This story is kind of basic, but I would think it is a combination of the device itself and internet access. Getting chromebooks into the students hands will be useful to many who only have phones. My school district asked us several times if I had devices for my kids, if we didn't I could have gotten a chromebook for them.

Sure, but I think the conversation regarding internet access and people who can't afford is separate and important. Not that getting the devices into people's hands isn't, just that each piece has its own challenges.

WRT unaffordable internet prices, it's really just another example of privatize profits and socialize losses. Hell, the ISP may be able to lower prices and still make a profit, but they think in %'s. Why make 4% when you can make 9%? In many areas, the big players also stifle competition, and have even sued towns for rolling out their own internet hookups to the residents. ISP's in most areas really are a monopoly, with virtually no realistic choices sans one. So who's left to pick up the tab, good old socialism, and of course paying the same ISP's that won't lower their prices for connections for low income people anyways.

Last time I checked, USA wasnt even in the top 10 for speeds / pricing / availability.

There are areas in the county I live in where broadband just isn't available, regardless of the ability to afford it.

In the same vain I would love to have natural gas where I live, and I live within the city limits. Can't get it because there are no pipelines within a mile of my home.
