Ok, let me start from the begining.
A few weeks back I had my PSU go bad on me. It melted itself to my motherboard but didn't appear to have damaged anything else. The only indicator I had of a bad PSU before it went bad was bad image quality. I guess it was feeding my vid card bad juice. So I replaced the PSU and mobo so here are my current specs:
XP1800+
512MB PC2100
Epox 8RDA
WD120GB w/ 8MB cache
I think that covers everything that is applicable to my problems. So here is what is happening. When I go to run games, the computer "stutters." The 3d will play for a few moments, then stop. After a few seconds it will pick up again only to stop again a few moments later. I am not sure if my video card is going or what. I had issues like this before the PSU went, but there is no way to tell how long it had been going for. And the problems have multiplied since the PSU went. I am going to try and get my hands on another video card that I can use to test my machine, but that may take some doing. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
Also, I ran 3dmark2k1 and I used to score in the 9000-11000 range. Now it won't even run through. I see large colorful blocks where the truck should be and it skips from part to part with decent lenght (10sec) pauses in between. My cpu is sitting between 40 and 45 so I don't that that is the issue. I am not overclocking and I am using the WHQL drivers from nVidia.
Some more info. I have also tried messing around with my pagefile. Moving it from system controlled to fixed. Tried different sizes as well. I also have had an issue with this board. It won't recognize my 2mb cache WD120gig drive. But the drive works fine on several other computers. I would imagine this is unrelated, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
A little more info: I ran 3dmark2k1 @ 640x480@16bit and it didn't do much better. It took forever to start the low detail car chase. Then it ran for a few second(1-4) and then stopped. When it started moving again it rendered part of the truck and most of the scene. Then in the high detail car chase, it did the same slow crap. Then rendered a protion of the scene. I have a friend willing to lend me his card over the weekend, but that is a while off. If anyone has any other suggestions/ideas/diagnostics please fire away.
Please help.
thanks,
