Serious NT Problems..

I just invested in an old computer that i want to use as an quake2 server. Unfortunatly the computer is only 120MHz with 48MB RAM. But it should suffice for a 8 player server. Now to my question;
Why is NT4 so darn slow? I´ve tried everything, but network-speed is aprox. 10kb/s when it should be 1000kb/s (Im on 10MBit).
Should I install Linux?
plz help! 😛

You've got a few options to try: 1.) What driver are you using for the NIC? Make sure you've got the manufacturer's latest & greatest. You can also download diagnostics to verify the adapater. 2.) Check the properties for the Server server (Control Panel:Network:Services:Server) to maximize performance for network apps. While you're at it, verify the network protocols you're running and the binding order. 3.) How are you checking your network speed? Your speed can vary based on other network traffic, not just the server. Personally, I don't think you're going to see 1000kb/s, but you can probably improve things a bit more than 10kb/s.

a 10MBit network should provide about a 100K transfer ideally... You have a few things going against you on this.

1: 120MHz (Barely enough for NT)
2: 48MB RAM (Barely enough to have NT run much less a game server app on top of it)
3: 10MBit Network, if plugged into a Hub you are only able to transmit OR receive data (ie. Half-Duplex), you really should move to a 10MB Switch or just go to a 10/100MBit Switch (Can be had in the FS forums here for about $75.00)

Also, remember that NT is a slug, and you are barely above the minimum required specs for NT...
