Serious discussion about porn sites

My family browse the net a lot and while I have no problem with X material prese, as it's protected by free speech I think, I don't think it should be so involuntary prevalent as it is now even with simple searches for relativly mundane items you get "results" in the porn area. Plus there are hundreds of well documented socialogical problems with porn I won't get into to save an argument and prevent from sounding prudish.. Anyway how about all porno/bomb making/drug making sites be required to have it's own domain? Like .xxx which can be always trivialy blocked therby avoided for those with concern? And secondly it will make it easy for those to find what they are looking for. Your thoughts? I'm thinking of piping out a letter to my elected officials.

the .xxx domains should have been made awailable last time they added new ones, but instead we got pointless crap like .tv and .biz which no one useses for the purpose it was meant for, same will probably go for .xxx when it happens unless they make a law that forces all porn sites to the .xxx domains and maybe owners of a .com .net or whatever porn site get a free .xxx domain.

So this idea has been floated? Cool. I just wish it had some teeth.. webnanny and it's ilk are by-passed now by foriegn domains such as .pl .no etc... Yes I've searched my sons cache.

Hey, stop violating the kid's privacy. Despite the clear necessity for some mechanism to control access to porn, regulators are so prudish they would rather ignore the problem than create a .xxx domain . . . which would be seen by some as acceptance.

I don't see any real prospect for controling porn. Much like China's fight against independent information, any attempt to stifle access will invariably be circumvented. Draconian measures might stop porn, but they would likely strangle the Internet.

You bring up and interesting point bali about circumvented. As now foriegn site owners are not bound by U.S.Cs and would'nt have to have .xxx in thier domain I imagine as they don't comply now with filtering technologies enabled by congress.

I did'nt say anything. I'm pretty hands off.. just like to work behind the scenes and throw sugesstions to him. I was 9 too remember.

Yup, it's ridiculous how a Search for one subject inadvertently brings up Porn sites. I suspect Bali is correct though, some would rather stick their heads in the sand than offer practical alternatives.

How would access be stifled by making all pron sites have a .xxx extension? That would simply enable the user to easily block all the offending material. You could then block it at the ISP level. You want porn, sign up with a service that does not block .xxx, or if you don;t want porn sign up with a company that blocks .xxx domains.

You cannot force all porn distributers to use .xxx . . . at best you could recommend they use .xxx . . . but as soon as they discover ISPs (or others) are blocking .xxx . . . they will revert to using other extensions. In response, the porn police will then advocate more draconian measures to control porn's presence. Top candidate; dumb filters that look for words like "teen" "schoolgirl" "tossed salad" . . . all of a sudden you cannot get access to the
October menu for the local school system

I agree but how often does that really happen? It's an inconvenience . . . and if I had kids . . . I would definitely saddle them with some dunce software like Net Nanny until they are old enough to circumvent it . . . you know, 5 or 6. But if the battle comes to protecting my sensibilities versus the prurient interests of others; IMHO their prurient interests should win b/c I always have the option of closing the window/browser.
