Sorry for the CAPs title, but I got a serious cmoputer problem.

Yesterday somehow the power in my room went out. Anyone once it got back running, the cmoputer got messed up. WinXP couldn't find the system32/config/system file or dir. I think that part of the hdd got corrupted. Anyway it said to pop in the WinXP cd and use teh repair feature.

Now I have the windows xp cd (which won't boot up the computer) so I put in teh win98 bootup disk to boot the computer up with cdrom support.

Now how would I start the repair process on the computer? What file on the XP cdrom should I use?

Thanks a lot guys! I really need to get my computer running as soon as possible, I have a lab due on tuesday among other things!

i forgot, but i'm pretty sure its FAT32 since I can read the drive after booting up with a Win98 bootup disk.

I'm running a scandisk now and it reported it can't read the cluster that has the windows/system32/config/system dir

I think you mean you weren't smart enough to use NTFS ;) NTFS is much more corruption resistant. Either way, isn't the repair process kind of automatic?

I remember having to do something similar to this...

If you boot into Windows98 w/ CD-ROM support, try putting your XP CD in and then try typing 'setup'. IIRC, it SHOULD say 'this cannot be run from DOS mdoe'. Then go into the i386 DIR or something named similarly to that, and type 'winnt'. I think that's the way to start it. It's worth a try.

You ought to be able to boot from the XP cd by changing the boot order in CMOS to boot from cd first unless your machine is old. Once the cd boots you choose the repair option.
