SERIOUS computer issue

When i try to start my computer i get an error saying that file "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" is either missing or corrupt

When i try to reinstall windows.. i get the blue screen. When i press "r" at setup, it says "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto"

I pressed 1 once since i didnt know what else to type, pressed enter, and got the blue screen again.

My HD is a 74GB 10,000RPM Raptor, and i really dont feel like taking a magnet to it

Anything else i could try? Thanks

Sounds like a possible bad stick of ram. I think going from previous experience, if I were in your shoes, I'd try running memtest86, or MS memory testing app (self bootable).

I ran into a very simular problem with an ABIT board running Crucial ballistix memory, both sticks tested fine in both of the memory testing applications I mentioned, but refused to run through Windows XP pro setup. After playing around with the system, and trying to get things working properly, I finally contacted Crucial, and they gave me a RMA number.

The bad news was that I had to go through this ordeal to begin with, and that Crucial didnt stock the memory I was using any more.

The good news is that Crucial has excellent customer support, and replaced my older sticks with a newer/ faster pair.

[*]Can you complete 2 passes of Memtest86+?
[*]When you boot to the XP cd, at the first screen hit 'R' for the recovery console, hit 1 and enter, if you have a password type it in or leave it blank and hit enter, then type CHKDSK /R and hit enter

This makes a lot of sense to me.. since im also using Crucial Ballistix, and ive been having other problems and someoen suggested it may be due to a bad stick of ram. 2 have 2 1GB sticks, im gonna try removing one and booting up
