Serious Athlon 64 issues

I've just hand-built an Athlon 64 system yesterday, however, I'm experiencing some serious issues with it. I'm wondering if people are experiencing similar problems.

1) Counter-strike 1.6 (Steam), and Quake2 refuses to run but Jedi Academy, Raven Shield, NFS Underground, and 3DMark2003 runs flawlessly.

2) Cannot enable the Cool'n'Quiet feature even though Asus claims to support it. I cannot find the "CPU" under "Device Manager" to install the necessary driver from AMD. I've already enabled the Cool'n'Quiet and ACPI 2.0 options in BIOS.

3) Windows does not automatically shutdown, but instead, it brings me to the "Windows is now safe to be shutdown" screen. And when I press the power button on the case the computer shuts down HARD without any windows shutdown processes.

I'm really having trouble identifying the root of the problem. I need your help and suggestions! Thanks.
This is my system spec & setup:

-No Overclocking
-AMD Athlon 64 3200+
-Asus K8V Deluxe
-512MB Kingston KVR400X64C3 DDR400
-ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
-Maxtor Diamondmax 9 120GB SATA
-Antec Sonata w/TruePower380 power supply
-Windows XP SP1
-ATI Catalyst 3.10
-VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.51
-Latest BIOS

Regarding your problems:

1) Need more info (do you get errors or events logged?).

2) Haven't played with Cool & Quiet

3) Check in Device Manager (show hidden devices) for NT APM Legacy Device.
It should show up as disabled. Enable it.

Are you running ACPI or Standard PC HAL?

BTW.. Welcome to the Forums.

First, thanks for the prompt reply! After I posted here, I figured it wouldn't hurt to run a memory test, so I did. Surprisingly, my memory failed one of the tests. Therefore, I decided to switch the memory module to slot 2. I ran the test again, everything was fine. I reinstalled Steam 1.6 and it runs now. So it looks like the brand new motherboard has a defective DIMM1 slot.

As for the power problem, I've checked the Device Manager with "show hidden device" on. Unfortunately, I cannot find an ACPI device, or the NT APM Legacy Device. The closest thing I can find is "MPS Uniprocessor PC" under "Computer".

Thanks for the help.

What are the brands and models of your motherboard, RAM, and power supply, Tweakie? If you happen to know your RAM voltage, what's it set to at the moment?

From the rest of it, it sounds to me like you need to make a change in your BIOS so ACPI is working, and then reinstall (yes, I said the "R" word) Windows so it can install in ACPI mode. You can manually force that by pressing the F5 key at the first blue screen of Windows Setup, if I recall correctly (it'll take note of you pressing F5 and offer you a choice later in the Setup routine).

If you let me know the motherboard in question I'll try to download the manual and help you find the BIOS setting you need to change.
