Serial port woes

I have a GPS reciever that I am trying to get running on my laptop. It hooks up to a laptop of mine via its lone serial port. However, the software that controls it will only recognize the reciever on COM 3 or 4, which is a problem since COM 3 is hardlocked to the laptops IR port and I can't find anything on COM 4 or how to change the COM for the serial port. Does anyone know a way to get around this?

Another thing, the software does recognize the reciever on USB ports. There is a serial->usb converter you can buy right from the company in part of a GPS kit, but its way expensive. Is there anything like that I could purchase seperatly and not part of a kit?

Thanks!
