Serial Port on Laptop

I have an old NEC Versa laptop and would like to eventually get a newer machine, but have noticed that on alot of newer laptops they don't have a serial port. I use my NEC along with a GPS unit for real-time navigation. The GPS connects to the serial port. Is there a work around/connection for the newer machines for add ons that need a serial port?

What you would need is a USB to serial adapter. I have used them before and they act just like a serial port on a PC. Here is an example of one.

Utterman, thanks for the reply.........didn't know they made such a device. That takes lots of limitations away on newer machines.

Btw... the Inspiron 8600 comes with a serial port built in...
