I'm thinking about buying this modem off newegg and I have a question about serial. I would get usb if they had it but newegg doesn't have any. I have a five pin serial port on the back of my computer, and in the picture on the back of the modem it's like a 20 pin connector. On the box it says serial cable included. I've never used used serial since it's really old but will this modem work for me? Also, If anyone has any serial modem objections let me know cause I can hardly find any information on them. Thanks.

my cousin's serial modem has the same big connector in the back. The cable included goes from that big connector to the smaller one so it will fit in ur pc.

Standard serial port on modem is 25-pin female D-sub, standard serial port on computer is 25-pin male D-sub. IBM took liberties with the spec and used a 9-pin male for their serial ports so both a serial and a parallel port could fit on one card slot cover. If your modem comes with a cable (most should now), it will have a matching connector for the modem end and both types of femal connectors on the compter end - to save costs they might have gone with just the 9-pin female as that is the vast majority now.
. USB modems are soft modems just like most PCI cards - they usually eat a lot of CPU clock cycles. Avoid. External serial rules! If all you need is basic fax/modem capability and don't need good v.92, I can show you a decent external serial for under $20.

Ok thanks guys, i'll go ahead and order this one. It's mainly going to be used for gaming, I read external modems were good for that.
