feeding off of Xerox Man's post about missing people, i was wondering how many of you knew this or realize this:

<< Dr. Godwin: There are between 35 and 40 active serial killers in the USA as we speak. >>

taken from a Court Tv webchat here

i knew because i studied it in college...did you all realize this?

This is by definition totally speculative and depends on one's definition of a serial killer, but it certainly is supportable by statistics. Frankly I am a lot more troubled by the fact that there are many thousands of repeat child molesters roaming around the US, since in my opinion their crime is even more destructive to a civilized society.

agreed. the number is debatable. i also agree about the child molesters statement you made. i just doubt that many people realize the number of serial killers is that high...even if it is speculative, at 20 active would be a shock to most.

Interestingly, on this topic, my mother spent a lot of time several years ago interviewing and getting to know a serial killer named Douglas Gretzler (he killed 18 people in 19 days in the late 1970s in the southwest), with a tenative plan of writing a book about him. She had worked on his case while clerking for the Arizona Supreme Court years earlier. I always found it a bit chilling to think of her spending time with him though she was certainly no friend to him and her interviews were essentially clinical. He has since been executed, so I imagine he is off of her speed-dial!

that is pretty cool actually. i am completely facinated by the whole thing. i had a prof i college that used to work in the BSU of the FBI and he did a lot of interviews with many different people. took a lot to drag stories out of him though...but it was worth the wait when you could.
