(CNN) —Who let the dogs out?

It wasn't Serena Williams but [she] is regretting eating some of her beloved canine's food.

Williams ordered the meal for three-year-old Chip -- a Yorkshire Terrier -- at the hotel she was staying at during the Italian Open in Rome. The salmon and rice mix -- which cost $17 -- looked so good, she said, that the 21-time grand slam champion decided to give it a try.

Wrong move as she quickly became ill and had to run to the bathroom.
"Before you judge me, look at it," Williams said on Snapchat in a video that was later posted on YouTube, panning to the salmon and rice. "Come on. It looks good. In fact when I take the food to go, they give me the same food package.

"It comes with the expensive looking spoon. I'm like, 'What the heck? I'm going to try a piece.'"

She took a spoonful.

"Let's fast forward two hours," she continued. "I just ran to the toilet. I thought I was going to pass out. It did taste weird.

"I force swallowed it. It tasted a little bit like a house cleaner kind of thing. But Chip liked it and it looked good."

Later looking distraught, Williams added: "I really don't feel so good."
However she appeared in better spirits not long after and joked: "I need a life."

Sounds like she has the ability to laugh at herself. This is good in any celeb/athlete.

why do we give food to our dogs that we wouldn't eat ourselves? my female boston terrier i had growing up always ate dog food as a last resort. she dragged it out and waited for table scraps. maybe a better question would be why don't they make dog food taste like human food?

Because dogs evolved alongside us for tens of thousands of years eating the scraps that we would not eat?

I remember an interview with a "Pet Food Taste Tester" when I was a kid.. I want to say it was on Good Morning America.

It should be OK for a human to eat. I wonder what was in it that made her sick?

From what I understand, most dry pet food is perfectly edible by humans, and it is often said it tastes the same or better than many human foods. This obviously was not dry pet food, so I do not know how compatible wet pet food is with humans.

Dogs have different nutritional needs than humans. If you only give your dog human food it will not be as healthy and won't get the right nutrients in the correct ratio for a dog.

as for this salmon with rice, which seems to have been offered for pets? It was almost certainly spoiled salmon and possibly spoiled rice. Or at least old and beyond safe human consumption. It would taste off, make her ill, yet be perfectly fine for the iron stomach of her canine creature companion.

There is a difference between food and diet. You can give a dog a healthier diet from "human food", basically meat and a few greens. Never understood why humans think that food that they eat is "food for humans".

Probably this. Humans are pretty fragile by most standards of biology. Plus even including apes in general, most of ape diet is made up of greens and fruit, stuff that does not spoil anywhere close to how meat rots.

when i was a kid my younger sister and i used to play "taste test" where we would blindfold each other and feed each other food and we would have to guess what it was. our only rule was no dog food or cat food allowed.

well one day i fed my sister dog food. she immediately knew what it was and spit it out.

needless to say we never played taste test again :(

She was a little misinformed. Dog is Food, that doesn't mean you eat dog food :awe:

I'd go "she takes her food doggy style"
As said before dogs have evolved living next to us eating the stuff we can't eat its understandable they can tolerate foods we can't but I will say I'd expect to be able to eat a fish & rice $17 dog meal.
My dog will eat bunny poop like its a treat. I try to keep him from doing it but sometimes he's too quick.

Our boys after making a ton of noise early in the morning

Bad idea. Restaurants/hotels that offer this type of thing are doing it only to make some cash off of their trash.

They aren't going to sell fresh food to pets. Granted, you would expect it to be cheaper for garbage pet food....but either $17 for a dog's meal is actually a discount for this place, or they are just gauging her because of her wealth. ....probably a bit of both.

One looks guilty and the other is saying "come at me bro".

Yeah it took cat 2 years but his badass side came out last year. He tolerates no crap.

Here he is getting his sample of dog food first. Please excuse the dirty floor I was working outside before this picture
