New IP is risky, games cost tons of money, what if a new franchise is a flop in a cut-throat business?

As Machiavelli once said:
There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things.

...

the incredulity of mankind, who do not truly believe in anything new until they have had the actual experience of it.

That being said, there will likely come a day when consumer become tired of the current state of affairs and there will be another video game crash. With a crash, the industry could be reborn, free of the likes of the old order. The Call of Duty and EA Sports franchises have been the worst offenders, yet people cannot get enough of it. It confounds me, I keep thinking one day they will see some innovation if they play the existing games that have near identical game-play and in most cases, similar graphics.

But, you must first convince console gamers to stop paying $60+ for a roster update to Madden NFL every year.

However, it should be noted that some sequels ARE good and innovative, see Baldur's Gate 2.

I don't want to sound rude or impolite, honestly, but the OP must be new to video gaming.

Uh, did this thread have a point?

Whining about Mass Effect 2 being made. This seems a bit misguided to me, but the OP is entitled to his wrong opinion :)

Doom II
Quake 2, 3
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout 2, 3
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
SW: KotOR 2 (awesome despite the ending)
TES: Morrowind & Oblivion
Half Life 2
Persona 3
Xenosaga II
. . . .

Yes, life would be so much better if we'd never been forced to play those games. If only their developers had listened to leonlee!

I only listed sequels of IPs from the past year and 2009. Obviously, we all know that the economy would have affected the decisions of publishers to play it safe on IPs' sequels, hence no <insert game name + 3>, <insert game name + 4>, etc. titles were included. I was just wondering if anyone else was intrigued/discouraged by it.

My favorite games are almost always new IPs, but sequels provide a large supply of decent games.

Did you just list Monkey Island 2? And said 2009/2010? Jesus...

And Dawn of War 2? You know it has nothing to do with Dawn of War 1 besides the setting (Warhammer 40K)?

And sigh? ME2? AC2?

No idea why are you upset. Some great games on that list.

nothing wrong with sequels as long as they're good.

This.
Bladurs Gate 2 was superior is every way to Baldurs Gate 1. Ditto Master of Orion, Age of Empires, and Alien Vs Predator.

Of course, part 3 in each case sucked balls. But whaddaya gonna do?

Yea, I was going to say the exact same thing. Monkey Island 2 is from the early 90s. It happened to get a remake though. I bet the OP is going to hate the fact that there's several more sequels after MI2. :D

I don't get the hate on the sequels. Sure, there's some games that didn't need a sequel (Bioshock 2), and there's some that regress a bit from the previous game (MW2, Farcry 2, Supreme Commander 2), but for the most part the sequels are just as good as, if not better than the original.

Pretty sure the list of non-sequels is quite a bit longer but a lot of the titles aren't worth mentioning because the IP isn't good enough to make sequels off of..
