HBO Films has greenlit "The Pacific," a WWII miniseries from "Band of Brothers" exec producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman that will serve as a kind of companion piece to that earlier project.

Production will begin in Australia this summer, with the mini to run on the net possibly in 2009.

Spielberg, Hanks and Goetzman will serve as exec producers. HBO Films will produce in association with Playtone and DreamWorks Television.

Tony To and Graham Yost are co-exec producers. Bruce McKenna is supervising producer, and Robert Schenkkan, George P. Pelecanos and Michelle Ashford are co-producers.

Project, an Asian-theater take on WWII whose title had also surfaced at one time as "The Pacific War," had been in development at the pay net.

Cast members and a director have yet to be attached.

"The Pacific" will draw on several sources of material, including Eugene Sledge's tome "With the Old Breed" and Robert Leckie's "Helmet for My Pillow."

Hugh Ambrose, son of the late historian Stephen Ambrose, will serve as a consultant on the project; Stephen Ambrose's book of the same name was the source material for "Band of Brothers."

"The Pacific" follows the stories of the two authors, as well as that of fellow Marine John Basilone, as they the fight against Japan across the entire Asian theater.

Much of the mini will be shot in Melbourne, where U.S. troops were stationed during the war.

"Band of Brothers" was a huge hit for HBO in 2001 and won six Emmys and a Golden Globe.

But despite the similarities between "The Pacific" and "Brothers," HBO Films topper Colin Callender noted that the new project will dramatize how the Asian war "profoundly differed from the European front. This was a different sort of war fighting a different sort of enemy."

After years of movies set in Europe, Hollywood has directed its WWII efforts toward Asia, as with Clint Eastwood's "Letter From Iwo Jima" last year.

I heard about this one awhile ago, but it had a slightly different premise then but still focused on the Pacific Theater.
regardless, I am stoked for this. Band of Brothers remains my favorite WW2 production.

Too bad they will be missing Stephen Ambrose and Michael Kamen. Both played important roles in BoB.

Damn, 2009? :( I heard a rumor probably 4 years ago that they'd be doing a similar series about the Pacific theater, and I've been waiting ever since. :(

It's semantics, yes, but The Pacific isn't a sequel to Band of Brothers. Unless there is some unannounced (and unlikely) character tie-in to Band of Brothers, it's simply a companion piece, set in the Pacific theater.

Plus, this one's an amalgamation of stories from multiple writers, as opposed to Stephen Ambroses's primary text for BoB.

That said, I've heard about this one while it was still in the planning stages, and thought Band of Brothers was phenomenal, so I eagerly await this.

This would/should be awesome. BoB kicked ass. I hope they do as good a job on this as they did on BoB.

I hope this isn't a liberal, anti-american bleeding heart hate piece. If I remember correctly, Steven Spielberg tried to make BOB as a anti-war movie... but it didn't come out right. With all the research and interviews, it was hard to make a typical "liberal" war movie...

I think Stephen Ambroses, et. al. also helped prevented the typical stuff hollywood cr*ps out. Without people like Ambroses, its more likely the result will be some pansy, oooh.. the japanese weren't that bad nevermind the batan death march, etc...

we will have to wait to see if the movie has some resemblance of reality... regardless of what liberals say now, during the 40's Japan was bad, Americans was good.. there was very little if any gray area...

My wife's grandfather served in the Pacific, and he managed to sneak a camera along with him on his tour. He's got some really cool pictures, for example...

1. Tons of pictures of piles of dead japs, with soldiers gleefuly posing next to them.
2. Downed figher planes, both American and Japanese, though only pics of the Jap planes showed bodies in them.
3. Pictures of the poison gas mortar shells sitting on standby ready to retaliate if the japs decided to cross into chemical warfare.
4. A New Zealand islander posing with the severed head of a Japanese guy. They used to pay the natives a bounty for each Jap they killed, though they only required the japs ear for proof. The islanders would bring one ear one day, and the other ear the next, and collect 2 payments, so they started requiring the islander to produce the entire head. The islander was only wearing a loin cloth and some tribal jewelry, holding the head by the hair with a big smile on his face (the islander, obviously the severed head wasnt smiling)

Very cool pictures. I need to see if he'll let me scan them and post them.

Yea, will the movie reflect this? Its reality... Remember the Japanese did a lot more and to civilians... Also, I have heard that the Pacific fight was much more brutal. Fanatic, suicidal japanese .. take no prisoners, etc..... hopefully, they tell the whole story which BOB tried to do.

Americans didnt even think of the Japs as humans, and treated them accordingly. He used to tell me how when they were transferring POW's via air transport to a central holding area, they would just throw 1 or 2 out the door midflight for the hell of it.

the Japanese didn't treat our troops well either. it goes both ways you know?

I loved Band of Brothers so hopefully this will be equally as good.

I can't wait for this! Band of Brothers was simply put -- AMAZING. It shows some real gruesome realities of what war is and does to people.

The only problem I have with it is that Speilburg continually goes back to WWII to show the suffering of Jewish people, but doesn't like to show the suffering anywhere else in the world. I would love to see him produce and direct pieces that deal with Darfur or Iraq. It would at least start to give people an insight what current wars are like nowadays.

The world needs a good film to understand what goes on in this cruel world. I'm glad Spielburg is around to tell the stories that exist only in words, and show them to people and make them understand with vivid images and cinematics. It's the best story telling tool there is. Talented directors like Speilburg help tell those stories. Kudos to him.

Payback for death march.. killing/gasing/beheading pows... wake island... rape of nanking... hiding gernades and detonating then when surrendering... and of course pearl harbor... there are also many other countless things that the japanese did.. but those were the only things that come to mind.

During the 40's, the japanese were told they were the ultimate race... everyone who wasn't were treated like dogs.. No wonder the Americans treated them the way they did. The japanese would have done worse if they had the upper hand...

Now, lets see if hollywood has the guts to show it how it really was...
