Government Motors: Down 45%
Chrysler: Down 42%
Ford: 5%

General Motors Co. said its September sales plunged 45% from a year earlier and Chrysler's fell 42%, while Ford Motor Co. saw a much more modest drop of 5.1%. All three were hurt by the industry's weakness after the expiration of the U.S. government's "cash-for-clunkers" rebate program.

So instead of having low sales that were level, car sales got a shot in the arm but will be DOWN for the rest of the year.

Who would have thought?

what were sales last september?

edit:
GM, the largest U.S. auto maker, said it sold 156,673 cars and light trucks in September. It said that figure represents a 36% decline from the prior month.

However, GM's sales chief, Mark LaNeve, said "the fourth quarter looks brighter and our year-over-year comparisons should look more favorable."

Chrysler Group LLC said its September U.S. sales fell 42% from a year earlier, totaling 62,197. But it said its U.S. market share rose from August 2009 and that it had 56 days of vehicle inventory at the end of September, down 64% from a year earlier.

and
George Pipas, Ford's U.S. sales chief, said the industrywide seasonally adjusted annualized rate of sales, or SAAR, fell to nine million in September after spiking to 14.1 million in August. Chrysler estimated September's SAAR at 9.4 million.

Mr. Pipas said sales picked up across the industry in the second half of September as manufacturers replenished inventory, despite lower customer-incentive spending.

i know my parents have put off buying a car in part because the lots have been depleted since c4c. when i took my car to the toyota dealer's body shop i was amazed at the lack of cars. so a good chunk of the falloff is probably that people aren't going to dealers as there aren't cars to sell.
