Should religious institutions be tax exempt in the US where there is a separation of church and state?

What about organizations like Billy Graham inc, or Jim Baker inc. They probably claim to be non-profit, but....

theres plenty of non-profits that have well-paid employees. i'll bet labor unions are non-profit organizations. in fact, they are a corporate entity! :Q

Normally, I would never call anyone stupid on this message board. MrPalco, you may be the first...

Billy Graham has nothing to do with religion???

As far as Jim Baker is concerned, he was a bleeting fool with darker motives. That motive being money....

TV Evangelists are just as bad as churches across the nation....

Billy Graham and Jim Baker have nothing to do with religion, they point the way to God.

Maybe you should REVISE your statement.

Religion has nothing to do with BILLY GRAHAM. BILLY GRAHAM was not mentioned in the Bible, but he has dedicated his life to the Christian God. He preaches for your God.....

Correct, he is my brother and partner in service for our God, The One Who sits on the Throne that is Great and White.

There should be no one who is tax exempt. We need to move from the current tax structure and insitute a national sales tax on everything sold with no exemptions for anyone. That is the only fair system.

<<Billy Graham and Jim Baker have nothing to do with religion, they point the way to God.

So they're involved with religion after all.

Maybe this is new for you, but church and state are strictly seperated in most countries in Europe, including The Netherlands, where I live.

You can't deny that religion influences state, but since we've so many different religions here, they enrich our culture. Only when one religion influences state more than other religions, it's a bad thing

if you have been following the various religon threads, it is known that MrPALCO is a looney and everyone ignores him. He even said that the US should become a "belovent theocracy"

and yes, I do believe that churches SHOULD pay taxes..

If they really are a non-profit organization I have no problem with religious institutions being tax exempt. If they make a profit, however, they should pay taxes just like everybody else has to.

For me the problem with the separation of church and state and religion in general is that everybody just thinks of one religion when they're talking about the separation - Christianity. There are many other religions out there in the US. If we allow Christianity in school or other places, the other religions should have an equal right to be represented.

<< Separation of church and state... >>

I don't have a copy of the constitution handy, but I believe it was meant to be the separation of state out of church's business, not separation of church out of the state's affairs.

Freedom of religion is never free untill the church is independent from the state.

<< I'm sure True Christians aren't interested in dictating to others. >>

Correct.

Dictating is done by the Secular Humanists, and their political machine.

:)

It is good.

Religion will always have its influence, though, because it comes down to individual's decisions as lawmakers. Those who believe in a religion will most likely pass laws that agree with their beliefs. Not necessarily laws that advocate one religion over another, just not pass anything that is glaringly defiant. So as long as we as Americans continue to elect of body of lawmakers that believe in a God, or at least profess to, well... It's up to you and me:). Isn't that special.
