Separating case vibration from your desk

For some unearthly reason (seriously, my fans and my HD are in plastic mounts), my case produces quite a bit of vibration. Now this in itself wouldn't be so terrible, but it vibrates up my entire desk. Given its design, this results in notable vibration on the mouse, which gets irritating and unpleasant for the fingers after a while.

So, what can I put between the case and the desk to absorb its vibration? I've already tried a ~5mm thick foam plate, but that didn't help much.

Household items are preferred, as I really don't feel like spending money on such a trivial thing.

Better idea is to fix the vibrations INSIDE the case. Go to SPCR; if you can remove the hard drive cage, suspend the drive with rubber tubing or place the drive on foam. Get some of the isolators under the accessories section of veraxfans.com, or get the Nexus decoupling kit at endpcnoise.com. Mounting the fans to your case with these isolators will limit/eradicate vibrations from your fans. For a cheaper mathod, buy some foam earplugs, cut them in half, roll them up tight, then mount the fan with that instead. Also consider a fan controller, less rpms = less vibrations. Anyway, you can get foam for less than $3 at an arts and crafts store, and foam earplugs don't cost that much.

Suspending HDDs makes a HUGE difference in case vibrations. I highly recommend it.

Fans can be either replaced or slown down. Or juse use E.A.R. plugs are some rubbery material that replace the metal screws.

Socks.

Socks work well, sports socks especially. Unsightly, messy, but they work well enough to help damp out the worst of it while you find a more permanet soultion. The rubber feet you can get for speakers is a good option that looks nice. SPCR is the best place to look to sort this stuff out.

Not a bad idea, lol.

For the record, I have a grand total of 5 fans. 2 120mm GlacialTech SilentBlades (1000 RPM) mounted in plastic brackets, a Zalman 92mm fan running at 1600 RPM on my XP-90, the vid card's stock cooler, and my PSU fan (which is also a fairly quiet one, presumably low RPM). Furthermore, my single Samsung HDD is mounted using plastic brackets that came with the case, nice and tight. Bottom line is, there's not much to be slowed down.

The vibration of the case itself is something I can put up with, what noise it may produce doesn't bother me that much. I just want to get rid of that little tingling when I'm holding the mouse. I may try that sock thing, though it's not very practical.

i put my case on old cheap give away foam mousemats😛 makes it easier to slide in and out of the cubby, but it also dampens anything

I know your not in The States.

Do a search for AcoustiFeet in your area. www.endpcnoise.com has'em at $7 for four.

There are other providers of this type of pad. They are generally rated to the weight they support. I have a set of these on my light weight Lian Li mid-tower. It had hard rubber pads and the case would rock if not just so on the desk. I don't know if it helped vibration because i never had issue with vibration.
Old fashioned high-end record turn tables used similare pads to keep sub-woofer vibrations from effecting the turn tables performance.

PS: Thanks for having a sense of humor 😀

The plastic brackets are what are transmitting (and possibly enhancing) fan vibrations. DEFINETLY suspend the drive or put in on foam. Samsungs are known to vibrate a lot.

Always different, Galvanised.

Just English'ing up your day 🙂

Acoustifeet are quite useful. Metal on wood will carry vibrations more noisily then well made rubber/foam feet.

Bungee cords from the ceiling for you I guess. 😀

Lol !!

What I normally do is stick very soft rubber supports under the case.... but then... they are freely available to me 🙂

To the OP, I dont know if its just me, but normal my optical drive is what contributes most to vibrations from the PC.... see if that contributing to yours as well ...
