Separate work area with nVidia card (8600GTS)

I just bought eVGA 8600GTS card.

I used to have a TV(Tube) as a second monitor with different resolution - extended desktop. So i was able to watch a full screen .avi video on TV while working on other things on my main monitor.

However, on this nVidia card, there's only couple of configuration options.

1) Extended desktop(with the SAME resolution- so my main monitor drops to something like 600x400) . the main taskbar extends all the way through to TV.

2) Duplicate desktop which displays the same thing...

3) and of course just using the main monitor..

ughh...

is there any patches or softwares which will allow me to have a separate desktop(with it's own resolution options) on TV while having my main monitor have the whole taskbar to itself?

btw, i'm using S-Video cable to connect to TV and DVI for my main monitor.

thanks in advance for help.

You need to go into nVidia's configuration utility and specify that the secondary monitor is using S-Video output. That's what I needed to do with a test MCE machine that has a 6800 in it, works exactly as what you describe you want to do.

thanks, Slugbait.

That's great. I'm so glad there's a solution.

However, I can't seem to find that option. I think i have the latest control panel...

it's version 1.4.700.07

Could you guide me? thanks again.

You want Window's "DualView" option. It should be available in the nVidia Control Panel or maybe in Window's Display Settings page. You have to restart your computer with both monitors attached to get it enabled. I've never tried it with S-Video, though, so maybe the problem has something to do with that.

Thank you very much Laminator and Slugbait.

your suggestions have solved my problem. but now it's in B&W... i'll look up past posts to find the answer.

thank you again
